When I was here, I didn't know what the sign meant by "inaugurazione di San Donà". Charo del Genio has now helpfully given the following explanation:

The date actually refers to the "opening" of what was the village of San Donà, within the boundaries of the municipality of Trento. The village is not natural, as it did not grow by an increasing number of people living there. Rather, it was artificially created, on land that used to be mostly cedar woods. Its construction was ordered by the government in 1949, with the intent of creating a number of cheap houses for the families of factory workers, who would then be made to work longer shifts. The government tasked the public insurance company INA with the actual construction works, since INA was a giant with different departments, including a house-building one.
The works finished in September 1959, and the village was officially opened on 26 September. Interestingly, unlike most projects of this kind, in the years since its construction, San Donà did not become an urban hellscape or a failed village, like happened for instance to the "167" neighbourhood of Naples, but it slowly integrated itself within the socioeconomic reality of greater Trento.
