The southern quarter or so of Illinois is sometimes referred to as Little Egypt. In fact the town at the very Southern tip of the state is called Cairo. I've just noticed that the flag of Centralia has a sphinx's head on it. The local newspaper which I saw in Carbondale was called the Daily Egyptian.
